Making Your Network Work Better
Router placement makes a real difference. Moving your router from a corner to a central location can double your coverage area. Here is why:
Wi-Fi signals spread outward in all directions. When a router sits in a corner, half the signal goes outside your home. Elevating the router helps because signals travel better downward than upward through floors.
Common problems and fixes:
- Dead spots in bedrooms: Usually means the router is too far or blocked by thick walls. Try a range extender.
- Slow speeds in kitchen: Microwaves interfere with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Use 5GHz if available or move the router.
- Intermittent connection: Other electronics like baby monitors and cordless phones can cause drops. Keep router away from these.
Before you buy new equipment, try these steps:
- Change the router channel in your settings
- Update router firmware
- Move the router to a better spot
- Add a simple extender if needed
This planner shows you the best spots before you move furniture or drill holes. The heatmap updates as you place devices. Red areas mean weak signals. Try different router positions until the red areas disappear.
